2.  DPS Expanding Chromebook Availability to Grades 3-5 and Wifi Access Outside of All Schools!

In order to provide the best possible equitable learning opportunities, DPS is expanding the availability of Chromebooks to families of students in grades three through five. These students routinely use Chromebooks or laptops as part of daily instruction. Similar to our distribution to secondary families last week, we will be making one Chromebook available per family of third, fourth, and fifth-grade students. We ask that families with personal devices appropriate for electronic learning respect that we don’t have sufficient devices for everyone. If you currently have a DPS issued Chromebook in your family or a personal laptop, iPad, computer, etc., we ask that you not request or pick up a Chromebook. As of now, we plan to distribute Chromebooks on Friday, April 3. We will be reaching out with further information soon.

In addition, DPS is temporarily providing wifi access outside of all schools. Families can access the filtered DPS GUEST wifi network at most locations from any device. At all locations, users may access existing networks when using DPS provided Chromebooks. Users are encouraged to remain in their vehicles or to use proper social distancing techniques. DPS IT staff will be working to improve coverage and to enable the guest network at all locations for all devices. DPS networks should only be used to access educational resources. Locations, where IT staff have verified coverage, are listed on our website.

Given Executive Order 53 by Governor Northam, all schools are closed for the remainder of the academic year, please be advised that we are working with community leaders, state officials and staff to determine how this decision will impact Danville Public Schools, specifically with regard to the educational programs, closing out the current school year, and school operations.

It is important to remember that this decision is unprecedented and therefore the implications on day to day operations and decisions are not fully realized.  For now, we will continue with immediate plans for meal delivery, and leveraging the talent of our staff to ensure and determine how to continue the delivery of instructional programs and other services.

School divisions will continue to rely on guidance from the Virginia Department of Education for specific guidance on issues related to closing out this school year, grading, and other educational outcomes.  For now, the health and safety of our community is the highest priority, so saving lives is paramount.  We will provide updates and guidance on an ongoing basis via robocalls, social media, and our website.  Ultimately, We know we can and will figure this out as a community by relying on the best information available to guide our decisions and ensure our health and safety. _____________________________________________________________________________
